Frequently Asked Questions About Boudoir Photography

Boudoir photography is a deeply personal experience, and it is completely normal to have questions before booking. Below are the most frequently asked questions about boudoir photography, answered by Jenna Adaway, a nationally recognized boudoir photographer based in Hartford, Alabama with over ten years of experience specializing exclusively in boudoir photography.

These questions reflect what women most often ask before scheduling a private boudoir session at The Boudie Barn and are designed to help you understand the process, feel confident, and know exactly what to expect.

What is boudoir photography?

Boudoir photography is an intimate portrait experience designed to celebrate confidence, femininity, and self expression. It is not about being a model or looking perfect. A boudoir session focuses on capturing you in a way that feels authentic, empowering, and reflective of who you are right now.

At The Boudie Barn near Dothan, Alabama, boudoir photography is approached with privacy, guidance, and intention so women feel safe and supported throughout the experience.

Do you work with everyday women?

Yes. I work with everyday women of all ages, sizes, and backgrounds. Most of my clients are not models and often walk in feeling nervous or unsure. Boudoir photography is especially powerful for women who do not currently feel confident and want to reconnect with themselves.

You do not need experience, confidence, or a certain body type to book a session.

Will you help me with posing?

Yes. You are fully guided during your boudoir session from start to finish. You do not need to know how to pose during your boudoir session. I guide you through every pose step by step so you never feel awkward or unsure. I provide clear direction, demonstrate poses, and guide your movements so you never feel awkward or exposed.

With over ten years of exclusive boudoir experience, I use posing and lighting techniques that flatter every body type naturally.

Is boudoir photography awkward?

No. While it is normal to feel nervous at first, most women quickly realize the experience is comfortable and supportive. Sessions are calm, private, and guided at a pace that feels right for you. Many clients are surprised by how relaxed and confident they feel once the session begins.

Should I get "in shape" before my session?

No. Boudoir photography is meant to celebrate you exactly as you are. You do not need to lose weight, tone up, or change your body before your session. My approach focuses on posing, lighting, and angles rather than altering your body through heavy retouching.

Your body is already worthy of being photographed.

What should I wear to my boudoir session?

You should wear whatever makes you feel confident and comfortable. This can include lingerie, robes, oversized sweaters, button down shirts, bodysuits, or simple fabrics like sheets. There is no single right look for boudoir photography.

After booking, you will receive a preparation guide with wardrobe suggestions, and I will help you choose what photographs best during your session.

Is professional hair and makeup included?

Yes. Professional hair and makeup are included in most session experiences. Your artist will work with you in studio before your session to create a look that feels like an elevated version of yourself while still looking natural and timeless.

Will my photos be shared online?

Your images are never shared without your explicit permission. Your privacy is always respected.  You are never required to allow your photos to be used on social media, the website, or marketing materials. Many clients choose to keep their images completely private.

Do you Photoshop your images?

I do not remove natural features such as stretch marks, wrinkles, scars, or body texture. Those details are part of you. I do retouch temporary distractions such as acne, bruises, or scratches. My goal is to help you see your real beauty, not create an unrealistic version of you. Check out my blog on this topic here.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. Flexible payment plans are available. This allows you to invest in a boudoir experience in a way that fits your budget and timeline. Payment options are discussed during booking and ordering appointments.

Do you photograph men or couples?

No. I specialize exclusively in boudoir photography for women. The Boudie Barn is intentionally designed as a women only space to ensure privacy, comfort, and emotional safety during sessions.

Where is your studio located?

My private boudoir studio, The Boudie Barn, is located in Hartford, Alabama near Dothan. I serve women from Southeast Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, and surrounding areas. Many clients travel several hours for a private, confidence centered experience.

What makes your boudoir experience different?

My boudoir sessions are designed to be private, guided, and confidence focused. With over ten years of experience, I specialize in working with women who feel nervous, unsure, or disconnected from their bodies. This is not about performing for the camera. It is about feeling seen, supported, and celebrated.

Is boudoir photography worth it?

Yes. Boudoir photography is worth it for women who want more than photos. It is an experience that helps you see yourself differently, reconnect with your confidence, and create artwork that reflects your strength and femininity. Many clients describe their session as transformative, not just photographic.
